With the release on March 5 of the scorching debut single and music video “Lève-toi,” Dobet Gnahoré, one of Africa’s most beloved talents, announces her upcoming full-length album, “Couleur”. Scheduled for worldwide release on June 4, the album marks an energetic homecoming and exciting new artistic direction for this dynamic diva from Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast).
The first of 5 singles to be released in advance of the full album launch, “Lève-toi” features a guest appearance by Yabongo Lova, a popular performer of the upbeat zouglou style. Sung in French and the Bété language, “Lève-toi” blends electronic rhythms, intricate guitar lines and powerful melodies to underpin an irresistibly catchy and upbeat groove. Dobet sends a message of hope and positivity when facing challenges, singing “If you think others are better than you, raise yourself up. Even though it may be hard, nothing comes without effort.” The inspiring video for the song was filmed in Abidjan and features jaw-dropping dance moves and elaborate costumes.
While known for emotional, introspective ballads such as “Pearls”, a collaboration with India.Arie that earned a GRAMMY in 2010 for Best Urban/Alternative Performance, Dobet’s new work reflects the positive spirit she found after returning to her native Côte d’Ivoire from her longtime home in France to ride out the COVID-19 pandemic. Working with producers, painters, designers, and videographers from the thriving local arts scene, Dobet was inspired by Africa’s young, cosmopolitan and creative generation. The result is an album filled with danceable spark and vibrant colors…thus the name of the album, “Couleur”.
“Couleur” also marks a return to the Cumbancha label, which released her highly-praised album “Na Afriki” in 2007. Dobet and Cumbancha will be releasing four more singles and videos in advance of the June 4 release of “Couleur”. Filled with positive messages, calls for female empowerment and hope for a bright future, Dobet Gnahoré’s new music will lift you up, get you moving and bring bright new shades to your life.
