Coumba Gawlo is a griotte singer born in 1972 in Thiès, Senegal.
Coming from a family known as Gawlo (griot in pulaar), Coumba Gawlo inherits from her mother Fatou Kiné Mbaye a particular voice and noticed at the age of 7 years.
At the age of 14, she won the “Voix d’or du Senegal” contest at the Blaise Senghor Cultural Center with a song called Soweto written by her father in tribute to Nelson Mandela and a real cry against apartheid.
At the age of 20, she was discovered and produced by the Senegalese producer Ibrahima Sylla.
1990 – 1995: His first album Seytane comes out under the label Syllart. An eponymous title, with arrangements, Manu Lima and some songs composed by Thione Seck, and Thio Mbaye percussion. This album will make it discover by the Senegalese public and propel it among the sure values of the Senegalese music.
Coumba Gawlo then produces four albums that will make her known in her country while continuing her studies.
1998: The international consecration will come with the album Yo Male recorded with the French singer Patrick Bruel. In this album, Coumba Gawlo sings several times among which Pata Pata, the international success of Miriam Makeba.
2002: In his album Sa Lii Sa Leé, the title Bine Bine pays homage to the sensuality of the Senegalese woman who seduces without vulgarity.
