Raised in a family of griots in Guinea-Bissau and now living in Lisbon, Kimi Djabaté’s music blends ancient Manding traditions, funky Afrobeat grooves, electric desert blues and acoustic Afro-Portuguese rhythms. Djabaté’s home village, Tabato, is known for its griots, hereditary singer-poets whose songs of praise and tales of history and legends play an essential role in Africa’s musical life. A griot by birth, Kimi has been playing the balafón, the African xylophone, since he was just three years old, and learned to play many other traditional instruments over time. In 1994, Kimi toured Europe as a member of the national music and dance ensemble of Guinea-Bissau, and he decided to settle in Lisbon, Portugal. In Europe, Kimi has collaborated with many exceptional musicians, including Mory Kanté, Waldemar Bastos, Netos de Gumbé and others. More recently, Kimi has worked with the pop star Madonna, and is a featured singer on her 2019 song “Ciao Bella.”
“Dindin” is a previously unreleased song that will appear on Djabaté’s upcoming album of the same name on the Cumbancha record label. For more information visit https://www.cumbancha.com/kimidjabate
The “Dindin” music video was directed and edited by Rui Miguel Correia.
LYRICS IN ENGLISH: Do not hurt people They will carry the wound for life Don't hurt adults And do not hurt children If you set some limits for a child Their frustration will soon end If you mildly discipline a child Their pain will soon pass If you are rude to a child They feel the pain longer But it may still go away However, if you hurt a child They will carry that wound for life If you hurt people They will carry that wound for life If you harm a child They will carry that wound for life Adults, listen Listen Educate your children Don't enslave children Help them to grow up Don't enslave children Educate children Don't hurt children Help children become better human beings Don't hurt them No one knows what they'll become Don't hurt children Don't enslave children Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Naaa Don't hurt children Don't hurt children Don't hurt children Don't hurt children Don't hurt children Don't hurt children Don't hurt children Don't hurt children Don't hurt them Don't enslave children Help children become better human beings Don't enslave children Educate children Don’t enslave children ... Don't hurt children No one knows what they'll become Don't hurt children Help children become better human beings Help children become better human beings Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Naaa Don't hurt children Don't hurt children Don't hurt children
