Blick Bassy is a Cameroonian singer, composer, guitarist and percussionist. Born in 1974, he grew up in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
The artist, rocked by traditional rhythms and music, has also explored several musical types. He is experiencing a meteoric musical rise.
At the beginning of his career, Black Bassy creates two musical groups. At the age of 17 when he was still high school student, he created the group, The Jazz Crew, which was a success in Cameroon.
In 1996, he founded the Macase group and began a new musical experience. The music of the Macasa group which mixes the Bantu rhythms, Jazz and Soul assures the notoriety of Blick Bassy with the release of two albums: Etam in 1999 and Doulou in 2003. The Macase group obtains numerous Prizes at national and international level such as the RFI World Music Award and Best Group by MASA in 2001; the Best New African Group at the Kora Awards and the CICIBA Award in 2003. Then in 2005, he decided to pursue his solo career and moved to Paris.
In 2009, he released his album, Léman, recorded at Salif Keita’s studio in Bamako, Mali. Sung in French, English and Bassa, Léman traces the journeys of the artist. This album is finalist of the Prix RFI Musiques du Monde. In May 2011, he produced the album Hongo Calling, which is the journey and tribute he makes to a traditional Bassa rhythm, the Hongo. In this album, Blick Bassy reads in a singular style the rhythms of his soil at Soul and Funk and traces at the same time the route of slaves from Cameroon to Brazil who took with them their music. Later, he produced his third album, Akö hailed by critics.
